I have spent many a night on the road. In my travels 66 and I have crossed paths many a Time. I would have loved to have driven it back in the day. Before the array of neon lights scaterd the landscape. I now cruise by at 75 m.p.h. the world goes by in a blur. The only chance I get is when the car breaks and cant go the normal speed. I Love it, the laid back roads, the desert air, and platos. My next adventure I will be able to drive the best piece of asphalt in the country!!Signed on: Wednesday January 13, 1999

I was originally inspired to find a site such as this when I saw an historic US 66 sign on Santa Monica boulevard on a trip to LA to see a friend. Since then I have been intriguied by the old US Highways. I recently took old US99 north to the Canadian border and was excited to find it mostly intact. I hope that someday I can travel US66. As a roadbuilder/maintainer I can appreciate the immense effort that went into the construction of this route 60-70 years ago. Without modern machinery the task of building 2500 miles of primary route is truly awesome. With todays safety regulations accidents and fatalities especially, are rare. The original route 66 construction would probably have had one death per ten miles of finished highway (actual stats anyone?). Having read this web site, guestbook and hit rate stats, the interest in route 66 is huge. Unfortunately if America is anything like England then the Federal Highways Authority will not view route 66 as a priority when it comes to allocating funds for maintenance, their absolute priority will be the interstate route. The only way to secure the future of route 66 will be from public pressure to maintain it as an "historic trail" (as parts of it seem to be in California). So "call your Congressman" as Eddie Cochrane put it. I hope to do route 66 by motorcycle in the future. Keep on rockin'.Signed on: Tuesday March 23, 1999

AT a Diner in Tucumcari, NM, an elderly couple apparently overheard my friend and I talking. They thought we were saying that we didn't have much money for a decent meal, so they went out to their motorhome and came back with a bag of snacks and explained that they wanted to help us out. We had to tell them that they heard wrong, and that we had plenty of money - we just weren't too hungry for a regular meal. I just took Rt.66 from Barstow to St.Louis - very interesteing trip and met lots of real nice people, but many of the sites in the books are in ruins or closed now. U-Drop Inn, FatMans, lots of restored gas stations (last year) are now closed. I guess it takes more than summer Roadies to keep afloat financially on old 66. Lucille says she may "retire" soon- would hate to see her station (in Hydro, OK) disappear with all the memories and scrapbooks - it's people like her that make driving the old 66 worth it. All the rest is nostalgia and ruins. Lots of "rt.66-style" diners and gift shops to capitalize on the craze; slick "museums" like the Rt.66 museum in OK. Still fun trip though (walked around 2guns in Arizona ghost town animal park! Do it while you can!!Signed on: Monday May 10, 1999

My family travelled route 66 in 1947 all the the way from St Louis to Santa Monica. I don't remember anything because I was only 2 years old. In May my son moved to San Francisco. I helped and we drove along route 66 in a Penske Truck for 4 Days. The experience was awesome and it was great seeing things that my parents sisters and myself experienced 52 years ago. I can't remember anything about the 1947 trip, but I'll never forget the 1999 trip moving someone out west just like it must have been when the road was built. Great Site!! I first traveled the Highway in 1957. We traveled from ARK to CA in a 1952 Chevy P/U pulling a U-Haul trailer. Dad,Mom, 2kids and a parakeet named "pretty boy". I loved that road trip. Two lane all the way. We ate bologna sandwitches off the tailgate and a few hamburgers for meals. Stayed in a nice motel on 9 mile hill just West of Albq. N.M. It took three nights on the road and four days driving. I have made several trips on the old road and some on I-40 (curses). My wife and I may make the trek this year back to Fresno, CA. using much of the old road. It is a permanent part of my memories of growing up. I was about 9 the first trip. This is a fantastic site and I'll be back soon. Geary PowellSigned on: Friday July 9, 1999

Finally got myself organised to search the sites and found this. It looks impressive! One of my future goals is to one day travel this world famous highway, taking lots of time and meeting the American people on the land, the road and in the diners. It's fantastic to see how important this route is all over the world, and long may it last down to the last skerrick of tarmac.Signed on: Friday July 30, 1999

This is a very interesting site! Part of the old alignment of route 66 passes through our park. I would like to update your site however. Petrified Forest's entrance fee is $10.00 unless you have a national park pass. Make sure you visit the Painted Desert Inn, an interesting National Historic Landmark, where travelers along Route 66 could stop for the night.Signed on: Monday September 13, 1999

My grandfather built a general store and gas station on Route 66 at a crossroads called Plew, MO some 5 miles east of Avilla. in 1937. It was a thriving business until I-44 took the tourist trade and the farm trade found it easy to drive to Carthage, Joplin, or Springfield. There were tourist courts every two or three miles, and the bigger ones had a restaurant. Log City Camp about three miles west of the store was a good customer. I spent a few weeks there after college, meeting the travelling public. It was quite fascinating to talk to the travellers and hear of their destination and why they were going. The store was closed in 1974 with the death o;f my uncle. The buildings were sold in 1980 to a woman who established a dog kennel. They are still there, but much run down. I still own 157 acres of land with 5000 ft frontage on old Route 66 (still a good highway as MO 96 connecting Springfield and Wichita. ) It is situated on the same quarter section as the old store buildings.Signed on: Thursday October 7, 1999

We just returned from our Arizona vacation. We stayed in Holbrook, Arizona at the Teepee Motel. It was great! It was close to the train tracks and when the trains came by during the night the teepee would shake. We also went to Winslow and stood "on the corner". After 2 yrs. of planning & research, we did our Rte 66 trip in June, 1999. It took 2 weeks from Chicago to Needles. 12 rolls of film & 4 video tapes later, we still have wonderful memories! We are ready to go again!!! The highlight of course was Angel in Seligman, although there were many highlights in the trip. We were surprised how many foreign people do the trip, although I understand they have longer vacations in Europe than we do in the US. Overall, it was a wonderful trip-I'd do it again in a minute!!Signed on: Wednesday October 27, 1999

I got my kicks on route 66- in 1991. I bought a brand new Chevy 1500 P/U, and we left Florida with 150 miles on the odometer. We made it to St.Louis and traced original "66" as much as possible. In Rolla ( I think ), We picked up a copy of "Route 66 travelers guide". It proved to be invaluable! We traced as much as 90% of the original road from St.Louis to Santa Monica,Ca. At one point in Oklahoma, you can stand on the "ORIGINAL" pavement, under the 40's pavement, overlooking the '60's fourlane hiway, and see the modern I-40 in the distance. We found a spot where there were about four layers of pavement over bleached white concrete. So we chisled out a couple of paperweight sized chunks for "souveniers". My personal highlight of the whole trip which was both good and not so good was:The giant milk bottle, Tepee motel rooms in Az., Cadillac ranch in Amarillo- Texas, The wild Burros in Oatman, AND... finally standing on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Ocean Ave. in California! I am planning on doing another tour of "66" someday. I want to do the whole thing, from Chicago to L.A. in My 1963 Nova Super Sport! Thanks.Signed on: Wednesday November 17, 1999
