We only did a small part of the famous R66,between Kingman en Williams. We really enjoyed the visitor center in Hackberry (hello to Bob Waldmire), don't forget to go the restrooms over there, it's very amusing. Hope to come back for a bigger part of the Main Road , in a "pink Cadillac".Signed on: Wednesday January 1, 2003

FYI - The Chain of Rocks Bridge in St Louis was re-opened in 1999 as a bicycle and pedestrian bridge, the longest in the nation. It is open daily during daylight hours. I've crossed it on foot twice and found it fascinating both times. The bridge is leased and managed by Trailnet, a nonprofit organization helping to develop the Confluence Greenway program, a national park system based on a network of biking-hiking trails along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Because it is the only bike-pedestrian bridge over the Mississippi River, it will serve as an east-west gateway into the park system. Trailnet recently commissioned sculptor Bob Cassilly to re-route the Riverfront Trail through the 100-year-old Laclede Gas Building, which was acquired as part of the Confluence Greenway project. In 1956 my family and I traveled from Ca. to In. I was only 5 years old at the time and do not remember much. But I do remember our 1953 Studabaker breaking down on the road just outside Flagstaff. A police officer stopped to help us get on the road. I plan on taking a trip to Ca. in 2004 on my motorcycle and I want my tires on Rt.66 as much as possible.Signed on: Sunday January 5, 2003

I moved from Ontario, Canada to southern California in 1963. Several portions of the then-new interstate highway system were in operation but, as a struggling young recent engineering graduate I couldn't afford the tolls so had to settle for the free but slow two-lane highway system -- not appreciating then that I was among the last to have the glorious priviledge of travelling the entire length of Route 66 from Chicago to LA. I now live within a few miles of the final portion of Route 66 (throgh Pasadena and on to its end at the pier in Santa Monica) and still get memory flashes every time I see the Route 66 signs on the light poles along the city streets. I wonder how many of the younger folks even notice them, let alone know what they represent.Signed on: Saturday January 11, 2003

Was only 12 when my dad traveled 13 of us across portions of the route in a old restored school bus.Dad was somewhat of a history buff. Didn't realize until my son came home from hi-school, with inquiries from his teacher, how valuable of a training my father had left me with. This site helped me relive a valuable piece of my past that I thought only existed long ago. Thanks for the memories!Signed on: Saturday January 11, 2003

Our family moved out to Frisco in 1996 to join the other snow birds who escaped the freezing cold weather in the upper midWest. Just before moving we decided to take a trip of a lifetime and see some of America's forgotten past. As we were moving to California, we began our trip by flying down to Texas and renting a car. We drove on some of the old Route 66 on and off until we reached Los Angeles. Then after staying in a hotel we continued along the old 101 HWY until we reached the Bay Area and our new home.Signed on: Sunday January 12, 2003

Rode our motorcycle from Sierra Madre, CA to Laughin, NV. At Barstow we got on Route 66 and had a wonderful time all the way to Laughin. We are planning a trip in April and will certainly include Route 66 whenever possible. So much of our county's history is disappearing. My wife and I loved the ride, the old buildings and this many views. If you've got the time, you've got to drive this road (if only for a short distance) and think about what it must have been like 50 years ago. I'll bet a lot of our folks had first hand experience in driving this beautiful bit of american history.Signed on: Tuesday February 4, 2003

Greetings, Route 66 fans. I am a travel writer and tour operator, leaving New Hampshire in about two weeks for Chicago - to drive the length of Route 66 from there to Santa Monica. I would be pleased to have veterans of the Mother Road proffer a guesstimate of how long I might be on the road. I will be photographing and writing, and figure about six hours of drive time a day. My intention is to stay faithful to the route without being a fanatic (i.e. I'll probably by-pass the centers of some cities). Any coaching would be appreciated. As we were on the I-15 through Barstow the bus broke down. After an hour the driver was able to get the bus started and we were off to a truck stop nearby. The alternator was found to be defective and the batteries were then charged up. Wanting to avoid the congested I-15 and to make up some lost time the driver took old Route 66 to Victorville then back on I-15. That was the first time most of the passengers (me and wife included) have ever been on the historic highway. It was an experience all of us will never forget.Signed on: Sunday May 4, 2003

When I was very young in the early 40's our family moved from Los Angeles to Illinois. I believe we traveled on R66. We left Los Angeles early on a rainy atill dark Spring morning I remember lying in the back of the packed station wagon and looking up at the stars as we passed through the mountains and the desert. I remember there was no other cars for miles and the desert was pitch black except for the stars overhead. Someday I'd like to use the same route 66 to trace my trip back to Los Angeles, the first time in 60 years.Signed on: Monday May 5, 2003

Note about station wagons.: See below. Ford introduced station wagons first in the Model A of 1929. Only about 12,000 Model A station wagons reported produced. Many were used by hotels for station to hotel baggage and passenger transfers, hence the name "station wagon" . : http://www.modelatrader.com/photogallery/viewerphotos/viewgallerymenu.html Also, The Automobile Club of Southern California has an excellent San Bernadino County map which shows many details and is a good tool for tracing Route 66 from Kingman to Los Angeles area across the Mojave Desert. The map shows the old route and some dirt roads which might have been even earlier "Route 66", in addition to railroads, sidings, mountains, etc. and other features. I am a newcomer to this site (last couple of years) , but have been making the trip from Amarillo (along Route 66) to either Barstow (turn north to San Francisco) or Victorville (turn west to San Fernando Valley). Been doing this about every three years since 1961. Be glad to supply or exchange info. Contact me by e-mail.Signed on: Thursday May 8, 2003

I recently drove to SO CAL and for much of the way beginning in Texas and through So California I painstakingly studied a Route 66 map as I drove on unfamiliar roads. By the time I drove on the I-15 through Hesperia in SO CAL I was awed with the sight of those majestic snow covered mountains ahead of me in the distance just before arriving in Los Angeles.Signed on: Sunday May 11, 2003

i drove from santa monica to st. louis in december of 1970. i drove it with a friend who had just bought a sports car and wanted me to drive with him to take it home to st. louis. we were in the navy stationed in long beach. i was going to fly home but decided to drive with him to st. louis and then i flew from there to richmond. we had a great time. i appreciate the fact that i drove on the mother road more and more every year. i am now 55 and my wife and i are planning to fly to arizona next may and spend time in flagstaff driving some of the old highway. we are then going to drive to santa monica for a few days. can't wait to go. my friend and i stopped on 66 in the middle of the arizona desert at 3 am one morning and he cut the car off to hear how quiet it was. it was eerie and beautiful. i wish i had thought to bring a camera for the trip. thanks for sharing your pictures. brought back a lot of memories.Signed on: Wednesday May 14, 2003

Quite often during frequent business trips I get down into the western parts of Illinois and eastern Oklahoma. Other times, I may be down in Arizona, around Phoenix or Tuscon. Where ever or whenever, I never fail to schedule free time where I can just drive my rental about, searching out stretches of historic Route 66 and the surrounding areas. What I've come to realize is that it's not the road that's special; it's the feeling one gets interacting with the people and the places that represent the heartland of America. At no other time can one feel so close to what represents the heart and soul of what we are and what we represent as a nation. Living in Boston, I love the ocean; but for some reason, one needs to get away from the crowds that flock to the shores, and to search out a quiet main street somewhere off the beaten path; a place where everything falls back into the proper perspective; Historic Route 66 gets you there, physically, mentally, and emotionally.Signed on: Wednesday May 14, 2003

Growing up in SoCal and living in AZ for a while had me traveling Rte.66 often as a kid. Very old-style gas stations with 5 and 10 cent soda machines, low 'bridge' constructions to allow desert rain run-off, and an accident we passed (with dead driver laying in the road) once dominate my memories of the early drives. Later doing a banzai run from New Mexico to SoCal. Wish they could have saved the road intact.Signed on: Friday May 16, 2003

I had heard a lot about Route 66 and have some curiosity about. Then I was traveling in California in 2000 with a friend and we decided to go to Grand Canyon. At certain point, what a surprise! I saw the sign indicating the famouse route. I had no idea I was so close. I pulled off the highway 40 and follow it as far as Williams. Another preciosity. I was amazed and enjoyed a lot my trip for this special little adventure. Another time I went do Chicago and then I looked for the signs and took some pictures of the end (or beggining?! - the sign says END) of the Route. One third time, I went to California again and decided to take a little trip to follow part of it. I started in San Bernardino and finished in Los Angeles. Of course its beggining and end are very diferent from the middle, when I first took the short trip around Williams. So I had Route 66 by few slices, but anyway I'm very happy and excited I made it.Signed on: Saturday May 24, 2003

Our Son was recently killed. He and his Dad were best friends and had talked of taking a Route 66 motorcycle trip for years and wanted to do so SOON. Unfortunately that will never happen. So... as a tribute to him we are planning to take this trip and scatter his ashes along the way. Our hearts are broken and our lives will never be the same without him. Past summer vacations we rode the Amtrack train into Los Angeles from Southern Illinois. Last summer we wanted our trip to be a little different and less boring as train trips go so I packed the family in the car (like the Griswalds) and drove on the interstates and Route 66. When we arrived in Los Angeles we unpacked in the hotel then we went to a five star restaurant and did an all out celebration knowing we actually traveled on the famed Route 66. We'd like to try that again in a few years. This time we'll bring more film.Signed on: Thursday June 12, 2003

Just outside of Los Angeles the route was in bits and pieces until there was a good long stretch through the desert. We took turns driving and having out pictures taken. To do this trip the right way, you have to do the following: Buy a beat up Chevy in Chicago for say $500 to $1,000, take it to a paint shop and have them paint a Rt. 66 sign on the hood of the car, and then have people sign it as you drive the road. Then when you get to LA, you sell your car to a dealer to get your money back. To make it further authentic, don't take a cell phone, don't use the AC, and have the reasonable expectation that your car will break down once. You also have to eat only at places that are not chains, and the same goes for motels. Now that's a trip!Signed on: Tuesday June 17, 2003

I was happy to see that you have the old Route 66 running through Oatman, Arizona. I 1948 or 1949 my family and I traveled the old Route 99 from Washington State to Bakersfield, then went on what was called California 466 to Barstow, and then east on Route 66 to Oklahoma City, and finally to our destination in Eastern Oklahoma on other roads, mostly Route 64. We were in a 1937 Ford sedan, and Dad boiled the radiator almost dry, and he stopped in Oatman to get some water. He had to pay $1.00 per gallon for the water. The road was mountainous and curvy in those days. The steep grades would cause the radiators on cars to boil. Needles and Kingman were bother little villages in those days. We made two or three trips while I was a child. In the 1960's I traveled it several times more. I still get off and drive stretches of Old 66 when I am passing along on I-40.Signed on: Monday June 23, 2003

Great site! Although I am too young to remember 66 in her prime, I am still fascinated by her. I was born and raised in Tulsa but have lived in New York City for 15 years now. Each year when I return to OK to visit family, we take a road trip and travel 66 through the state. During the 40's my grandmother and aunt owned a restaraunt on 66 just outside of Sapulpa, called The Western Chicken House. I understand they did a great fried chicken. Anyone remember the place?Signed on: Sunday July 6, 2003

Just got back from a coast to coast that included a ride on Route 66. I took the journey solo and hope to take my wife some day. I needed something to write about and now I have it. It is something every Amaercan should do! There is a lot of history.Signed on: Wednesday August 20, 2003

I'm sure many of you have heard about the freak storm that came through Vegas last weekend. I want to reassure everyone that we get less than 4 inches of rain each year and the current rain is nothing more than wacky weather. Most of the rain has been in the hills surrounding the Vegas Valley and it's the water rushing down the hillsides and coming into town that floods the streets. We are planning to update our sewer system soon to handle flash floods. I hope the past events will not persuade you to change your already made plans to visit Vegas. Thanks, John Baptista LVCCSigned on: Wednesday August 20, 2003

I notice questions on the Guest Book from time to time as to which direction - East to West - or - West to East ? My Opinion - East to West (definitely, elementary, my dear Watson ! ) And have your Jack Rittenhouse and Tom Snyder books close at hand for reference. Contact me by e-mail for any further questions, which I will be happy to (attempt to, that is) answer.Signed on: Thursday August 21, 2003

excellent site; I was 9 in 1959 when I drove east most of the way on 66 w/ my folks; hitchhiked it east to west in 1969; then honeymooned east to west along it in 1973. The radio in our Nova went out in Tucumcari in 1973 and didn't play again until going thru Tucumcari again in 1975, each time when I announced to my wife that there was a Superstition mountain in Tucumcari...go figure...Stan H.Signed on: Wednesday September 10, 2003

The weekend after the 9-11 attacks on the pentagon and N.Y.'s world trade towers I took a peaceful route 66 road trip to Los Angeles and the shores of the Pacific ocean. I had to get away, at least for the weekend the turmoil that was happening out on the east coast. I love the Mother Road. When on it, I don't want to leave. The Wigwam in Holbrook is a must stay! Love stopping by and saying hello to Angel and his brother and wife in Sieglman. With the present state of affairs in the USA, I wonder what the Route 66 of tomorrow will be! I feel good and safe on old 66, I guess because she's made it thru so many hard times, and I feel the "spirit" of all those people who travelled it back in the Depression and the Dust Bowl days. I'm only 53, but it is a spiritual ribbon across this land and I feel it. Who could forget the Joad family from the "Grapes of Wrath", all the Oakies and such. Those flimsey old trucks that would overheat and vapor lock (remember vapor locks! LOL!!) Literally they travelled on a wing and a prayer with the shirts on thier backs. The old historic pix and the looks on everyone's face. The kids.....some of which were discarded. Bums on trains.....and we didn't even have a fraction of the horrifying violence we have today. People were kinder to one another, in some way, back then. There was a level of respect that just barely exists today. People were, for the most part, nice to one another. I love and respect that road with all my heart. JasonSigned on: Saturday September 27, 2003

Just one more thing. As I have read thru the guest book, I want to write to each person who has left a message....but of course cannot do that. Look at how many of us of ALL ages are touched by this road and it's history and people. I'm here to tell you right now, that there's a river of nostalgic tears going down my cheeks right now. Take care, and God, Creative Intelligence, Spirit, etc whatever you want to call IT, bless you all.Signed on: Sunday September 28, 2003
